Unveiling Perspectives: Decolonising and Diversifying in Fine Arts at UAL

According to Georgia Public Broadcasting 2024, “Incentives are benefits or costs of an action that influence people’s decisions and behaviour”. Alternatively, incentives can make people do something they wouldn’t otherwise do. Using incentives in research can speed up the research process and boost response rates. I don’t intend to influence or coerce to participate in research. There is the risk of participants being exploited from accepting to partake in the study for the wrong reasons. They may feel influenced to take on inconvenient or uncomfortable activities or be motivated to volunteer repeatedly for research studies, offering remuneration for participation. At UAL, the socioeconomic of the students varies massively. According to UAL Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Annual Report 2021/22, 34% of home undergraduate students enrolling in December 2022 were from higher deprivation areas. A micro reason for not pursuing the incentive route is cultural sensitivity.
Furthermore, I have two reasons for not pursuing the incentive route, firstly, to establish whether participants’ refusal is based on the subject matter, ignorance, not interest, and no time for this attitude. Secondly, there is the cultural sensitivity notion, we have diverse cultures of students at UAL and I don’t intend to offend anyone.
